A Confession About This Book

I want to end with something the Witness Test requires of this book itself, since it would be a strange kind of hypocrisy to build an instrument and refuse to point it at my own hands.

Somewhere in these pages, I have almost certainly performed a version of the second sin — softened a sentence I should have left hard, invested more meaning in my own history than the facts strictly support, redistributed some weight I was not entitled to redistribute. I do not know exactly where. I suspect you, reading closely, may have caught a place I did not.

If you did, that catching is the book working correctly. A book about the second sin that could not itself be caught committing it would be the most suspicious book of all.

Run the test on your own history now. Not on mine. Choose the harder sentence today.
