What the Naming Changes
――――――――――――――――――
I said, at the beginning, that I used to think I had committed one sin and was struggling to repent of it. I want to end by telling you what changed once I understood there were two.
The first sin stopped occupying the center of my attention, because it no longer needed to. It was finished; it had been finished for years; the work of grieving it honestly is real but bounded, and eventually, if you let it, it settles into something you carry rather than something you are actively doing.
The second sin moved into the center instead, and it has stayed there, because it is not finished, has never been finished, and will not finish on any schedule except the one I set for it, today, and tomorrow, by choosing which sentence to believe.
This is the only progress this book can honestly report: not resolution, but a redirected fight, aimed finally at the enemy that is actually still in the room.
