AUTHOR’S PREFACE

This book began with a small and unreasonable question. I would see an old recording—a wedding, a school assembly, a street filmed before the shops changed their names—and instead of watching what was happening, I would wonder about the people trapped inside it. Where could he be now? What became of her? Did that child grow old enough to become unrecognizable? Is the laughing man at the edge of the frame still alive? Does he remember that afternoon at all? The question is ordinary until it refuses to leave. Then the past stops being a place behind us and becomes a corridor full of half-open doors. This novella enters that corridor.

A NOTE ON THE PSYCHOLOGY For the purposes of this book, I call the protagonist’s pattern retrospective existential rumination. The phrase is fictional. It is not a diagnosis. The pattern imagined here begins when an old image triggers more than nostalgia. The viewer becomes preoccupied with the continued existence of people who once occupied the scene. The mind performs an impossible audit: alive, dead, changed, forgotten, unreachable. Real psychological ideas sit beneath the fiction: nostalgia and autobiographical memory, continuity between past and present self, repetitive negative thinking, mortality awareness, and death anxiety. The story asks what might happen if those ordinary processes were reorganized into a private bureaucracy from which one person could no longer resign.
